Walk Sydney Streets - Alan Waddell

Long before the 52 Suburbs blog started or even gained popularity a man was walking Sydney streets and documenting his adventure, starting in 2002 Alan Waddell would choose a suburb and Walk the streets for a few hours at a time.

Whenever I'm longing to see Sydney, not just the glamorous beautiful parts I go to the website
http://www.walksydneystreets.net/index.htm
which is now dedicated to Alan who past away in 2008.

Its a great reminder how the city is in reality, with its sprawling suburbs, tree lined streets and interesting finds just around the corner. I love the humour in some of the photos with Alan starring in most of them.

To see my girl and go for a drive

Dog, Panelvan and the coast-
Back in Sydney for a short visit, catching up with family, friends and a little work meant I got to reconnect with my dog and car... managing to do both at the same time.
My dog loves riding in the front seat and and once she's there its pretty hard not to just let her be and go for a drive..
I love the headland at Clovelly (one of my favourite snorkeling spots)  I hadn't been there in  a while and even though it was a rainy November day I wanted a sea breeze and ocean horizon fix regardless of the weather....

Arrive in Sydney.

My Dad's in hospital, he had a detached retina occur just a day before i was flying out of New York, my parents decided not to tell me so I didn't worry the whole flight back home. The main purpose of me coming back to Sydney is to go to my younger brother Ben's wedding in Lennox Head (almost 800 kms away). With Dad possibly not able to make it as he can't drive or fly due to the fluid and air bubble that has been pumped into his eye my Mum works out that they can get a train.
We were all really happy that Dad could make it, while we were there he celebrated his birthday.

Volvo 142

A Volvo 142 S, no less !!
Back in November I mentioned the Volvo 122 I saw in Carroll Gardens, here's a couple o' pictures of a 142 Sport I spotted in Williamsburg.
The 142 (the coupe or 2 door version of the 144) was almost the first car I ever owned. I can't remember the specifics of the car I nearly bought, other than it was dark blue and already had an almost new radio/cassette deck and 4 speakers installed...

Mary Curran

Great friends who were on their extended honeymoon met Mary randomly at a restaurant and suggested I meet her.
I contacted her with a little apprehension but was welcomed into her fold with open arms and introductions to everyone she knows.
Great girl who has become a good friend, even though we don't see each other often enough.
Her website of her styling (hair/make-up) is www.mcurranstylist.com
and you can also follow her styling tips at http://twitter.com/Mary_Curran

Converse John Richmond

I don't think I have that many sneakers, I guess that I do keep some on higher rotation than others though.
I decided after one of my favourite pairs we totally chewed by the streets of New York that I'd start posting the before and afters. Unfortunately I have only the after shot of these ones.
John Richmond all black Converse styled like the traditional Jack Purcell  in leather with a hint of red on the toe smile.

Empire State Building Dirigibles Dock

If you're unaware that the top 200 feet of the Empire State building was an after thought you may be surprised to also know that it was build in part as an Airship docking station, or so the story goes! Empire State Building Official Website
One great thing to come out of the fact that the Dirigible docking station wouldn't work is the  102nd Floor observation Deck

I Love Free NY.. I ♥ NY

I love NY in Summer....
The heat (well when its not too hot), the people out in the parks but I really like all the free concerts and activities that seem to pop up during the warmer weather, really starting in Spring you need to keep a watch of events on the horizon. See my previous posting for the NYC Parks calendar here and get out.

Magnificent 7 (actually so many more!)

Heavily influenced in my early movie watching days as a kid by my Dad, The Magnificent 7, was one of those movies we (my two brothers) and I would watch with Dad. I owe my love of Westerns to him. Although I never really got into the John Wayne movies, I have lost count how many times I have watched a Clint Eastwood western and still really like watching anything he is associated with.
Too many free movies in NY to list but suffice to say I have travelled to see at least one a week during summer to date.

Popular Mechanics - Allyson Torrisi

Allyson Torrisi.
I met Ally years ago on a job when she was working for Turner broadcasting.
We spent many fun times together, we were working with a small Stills/Gallery crew on Turner TBS movie shoots in Australia and New Zealand. Travelling together for roughly 4 weeks the small crew of about 6-8 became close and I'm still in contact with most of these people years later.
I'd love to see all these guys more often, Allyson included but busy schedules are the downfall to that.
Luckily I found out that she had moved back to NY so we can at least try to schedule in the occasional meeting or dinner.

Red Bull Manny Mania 2009

Skate!
Red Bull manny mania at the skate park under the Manhattan bridge. Alex Corporan who I met through a friend was helping organize the event.
Playing around with my Canon tilt-shift lenses, I wanted to catch the action of the skaters cruising around the spectator area, focusing only on the boards as if they were like a magical flying carpet.

Jacqueline Cookson

Great Make-Up artist and Hair Stylist, is again based in New York. After living in Sydney since about 2000, where we met through friends, she decided to move back to NY, like many of us creatives, to push her career further. We don't see each other often but usually catch up while she cuts my hair.
Have a look at her website- www.jacqueline cookson.com.

FREE NEW YORK ♥ NY

Check it !!
So many free concerts, shows and activities to do.
A great resource to start off the search for what's on and where to go is the New York City Parks website...
once you find an event you can download the event dtails and all to your iCal, Google calendar or whichever calendar program you use.
the NYC Parks Dept extensive Calendar. of events across all 5 boroughs!!

Edwina's Wall

Great friend and amazing illustrator, Edwina White asked me to photograph a nook in a shop that she had painstakingly painted with illustrations.  Unfortunately the shop was closing down and she was worried it would be painted over. The space was tight but I managed to shoot the whole space and then lots of details. Luckily to have recorded it before it was lost to a coat of paint.

NY Photo Fest

My first NYPH !! Lots of great exhibitions, I especially liked the slideshow/ artist talks lecture held in St. Ann's warehouse.
Great to catch up with Allyson Torrisi (now the Photo Director at Popular Mechanics magazine) and Barbara Griffin (Senior vice president, Image Management at Turner Broadcasting System) both of whom I met in Australia years ago on Turner Broadcasting jobs.

New Business cards

My design of a new double sided business card. I would have loved to get the centre cut out to have them look like old slide mounts but thought they would be too fragile.

A fortnight back in NY

so I go to social security to update my address
As easy as changing your address anywhere? You would think so...

I get there, to the local office, it's crowded, take a ticket, manage to get a seat- I wish I could have recorded it.
Apart from- people arguing at the counter, the security guard steping in, from what I since found out just the usual.

the classic for me was whenever a number was called from the counter or a door "265" a chorus rang out,"265" , "265" , "265" - like the people who were repeating the number didn't think the rest of us heard !!
One guy took it upon himself to be the offical repeater and with every number would stand up and say it about 4 times, once in each direction.
So my number gets called and then 4 times again, after a two hour wait I get to the counter and the guy looks at my paper work and says oh no, you supposed to be at the Brooklyn office- I can't change your address here.
What's with that.
So go head off to Brooklyn- and that's another long story.

Brooklyn Bridge

It doesn't matter how many times I walk over it, take people on a walk across it or see it from a distance, I just love this bridge. I still photograph it every time I walk across it, not so much the structure, I mostly love the cabling.
